Ambasador Kanady w Polsce Leslie Scanlon złożyła we środę 10 lutego wizytę u marszałek Sejmu Elżbiety Witek.
Podczas spotkania Marszałek Sejmu wyraziła zadowolenie z obecności w kanadyjskim parlamencie posłów polskiego pochodzenia. Elżbieta Witek odniosła się także do oświadczenia jednego z deputowanych kanadyjskich, który w tamtejszej Izbie Gmin wygłosił oświadczenie z okazji 81. rocznicy pierwszej masowej deportacji Polaków na Syberię dokonanej przez reżim stalinowski, co pokazuje zrozumienie dla bolesnych wydarzeń z historii Polski.
Ambasador Scanlon podkreśliła, że Polska jest najważniejszym partnerem handlowym Kanady w Europie Środkowej.
Rozmówcy zgodzili się, że Polska i Kanada pozostają bliskimi sojusznikami (m.in. na forum NATO), których łączą wzajemne wartości, interesy i tradycje zgodnej współpracy. Istnieją także dobre perspektywy rozwoju współpracy w dziedzinach gospodarczej i obronności.
Omówiono także rozwój sytuacji na Białorusi. Elżbieta Witek podkreśliła, że każde wsparcie dla przemian demokratycznych oraz działaczy prześladowanych przez reżim białoruski jest bardzo ważne. Leslie Scanlon zapewniła z kolei, że Kanada wspiera i podziela z krajami UE, Wielką Brytanią i USA fundamentalne kwestie demokracji na Białorusi.

Meeting of Marshal of the Sejm with Ambassador of Canada
Ambassador of Canada to Poland Leslie Scanlon paid a visit to Marshal of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek on Wednesday, February 10.
During the meeting, the Marshal of the Sejm expressed her satisfaction with the presence of deputies of Polish origin in the Canadian parliament. Elżbieta Witek also referred to the statement of one of the Canadian deputies, who in the House of Commons made a statement on the 81st anniversary of the first mass deportation of Poles to Siberia by the Stalinist regime, which shows understanding for the painful events in Polish history.
Ambassador Scanlon emphasized that Poland is Canada's most important trading partner in Central Europe.
The interlocutors agreed that Poland and Canada remain close allies (including on the NATO forum), which share mutual values, interests and traditions of harmonious cooperation. There are also good prospects for the development of cooperation in the fields of economy and defence.
The development of the situation in Belarus was also discussed. Elżbieta Witek emphasized that any support for democratic changes and activists persecuted by the Belarusian regime is very important. Leslie Scanlon, in turn, assured that Canada supports and shares with the EU countries, Great Britain and the USA the fundamental issues of democracy in Belarus.
